JD#001: MPWRD XPRNC Teaching Artist Job Description

As an Independent – contractor, the Teaching Artist role is the lead for the MPWRD XPRNC summer camp, conducted in partnership with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and the Alexandria City Public Schools. Services are provided off-site, at a location identified by one of our aforementioned partners. 

Momentum Collective Inc., is an Alexandria-based nonprofit whose mission is to use the arts to educate, enrich and empower the lives of youth. We provide free out-of-school time arts education programs, covering a variety of performing arts disciplines, to youth between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. We also are a performing arts company, mounting several theatrical and musical events throughout the year. As an organization, our emphasis is on the cultivation and showcase of performing arts talents.

The Teaching Artist plays a critical role in the success of the program and takes on a variety of roles within the program including, facilitator, mentor, coach and teacher. The camp will serve elementary school-age youth.

Teaching Artists should have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: mixed media, visual art, theatre arts, music production, spoken word, dance, puppetry, creative writing, and be passionate about teaching school-aged children in out-of-school time settings.

Our team of Teaching Artists are experienced in creating safe learning environments to foster pro-social development, modeling positive behavior, and supporting participant accomplishments, no matter how large or small.

The Teaching Artists interact with site staff, fellow teaching artists, and program staff, and are responsible for all daily program goals. Candidates must be committed to on-going professional development as an arts practitioner and educator and to facilitate performing arts presentations by program participants. All Teaching Artists report to the Artistic Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and implement the MPWRD XPRNC arts integrated curriculum and create lessons to support social and emotional development through theatre/performing arts instruction
  • Highly skilled in one or all of the following theatre/performing arts disciplines in their art medium
  • Experienced at guiding students to full-scale culminating presentations
  • Allow students to “share out” what they have learned and reflect on their learning at the conclusion of the camp
  • Plan and establish a safe learning environment for all participants and artists
  • Participate in pre-plan and post-planning meetings with co-teaching artists, the artistic director, and/or mentors
  • Document workshop agenda and successes and challenges for each session and share with Administrative staff
  • Report weekly with Administrative staff any workshop concerns including lessons, learning, attendance, and facility issues
  • Committed to on-going professional development as an arts practitioner and educator and to participate in Momentum Collective Inc. coordinated training workshops
  • Compliance with all health and safety guidelines
  • Proper documentation of contract service hours
  • Submit participant attendance and sign in sheets, and other documents in a timely manner in accordance with the Administrative deadlines
  • Be a positive role model to students, program staff and fellow Teaching Artists
  • Assist with the setup and running of performing arts presentations/concerts featuring program participants
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary: $65/hour

Program duration: June – July

Hours: 2-4 hrs per week

Services are provided off-site, at a location identified by one of our aforementioned partners.

As an Independent – contractor, the MPWRD XPRNC Summer Intern role assists Teaching Artists in the execution of the MPWRD XPRNC Summer camp, conducted in partnership with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority, and the Alexandria City Public Schools. Services are provided off-site, at a location identified by one of our aforementioned partners.

We provide free out-of-school time arts education programs, covering a variety of performing arts disciplines, to youth between the ages of 6 and 18 years old. The intern plays a critical role in the success of the summer performing arts camp including the proper set-up of work spaces, assisting teaching artists with the facilitation of performing arts classes, and serving as liaison with site coordinators. The camp will serve elementary school-age youth.

The intern must be a resident of the City of Alexandria, and between the ages of 16 and 18 years old. A background in the performing arts is preferred.  In accordance with the mission of Momentum Collective Inc., interns will also participate in a series of youth development workshops.

The MPWRD XPRNC intern interacts with site staff, fellow teaching artists, and program staff, and are responsible for all daily program goals. Candidates must be committed to on-going professional development as an arts practitioner and educator and to facilitate performing arts presentations by program participants. All Teaching Artists report to the Artistic Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to and implement the MPWRD XPRNC summer performing arts camp
  • Attend scheduled youth development workshops
  • Prepare and maintain creative spaces utilized for performing arts instruction
  • Assist Teaching Artists in the execution on perform ing arts classes
  • Supervise youth program participants to maintain a constructive and productive learning environment
  • Track attendance for program participants
  • Prepare program reports for Executive Director
  • Ensure the availability of supplies and materials for the execution of the camp components
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Compliance with all health and safety guidelines
  • Proper documentation of contract service hours
  • Submit participant attendance and sign in sheets, and other documents in a timely manner in accordance with the Administrative deadlines
  • Be a positive role model to students
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Salary: $13.50/hour

Program Duration: June – July

Hours: 20 hrs per week
